New York Downtown Hospital expands Orthopaedic Services for Lower Manhattan community
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a major clinical department at
New York Downtown Hospital.
New York Downtown Hospital orthopaedic surgeons now perform over two
thousand inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures each year in
hospital operating rooms. These include adult reconstructive orthopaedic
surgery, primary and revision joint replacement of the hip and knee,
ambulatory and complex spinal surgery, foot and ankle surgery, shoulder
and elbow surgery, surgery of the hand and wrist, orthopaedic oncologic
surgery, surgical treatment of fractures and other orthopaedic trauma, as
well as a large variety of arthroscopic and sports medicine procedures.
The orthopaedic surgery faculty practice suite is located on the fourth
floor of the hospital and provides comprehensive orthopaedic care.
Orthopaedic surgeons in all orthopaedic specialties are readily available
to see patients in outpatient consultation and follow up care in a state
of the art office facility. An outpatient physical and occupational
therapy center is available on site.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York Downtown Hospital is
an ACGME approved residency training site in orthopaedic surgery as an
integrated part of a rotating orthopaedic surgical residency training
program. Orthopaedic surgical residents in all years of training rotate at
New York Downtown Hospital.
Orthopaedic surgical conferences are held each weekday throughout the
academic year and include lectures by attending and resident staff and a
monthly morbidity and mortality conference. There are ongoing departmental
performance improvement programs including quality assurance and
continuing graduate medical education, as well as an active clinical
research program.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery also maintains a Division of
Podiatric Surgery with a CPME approved podiatric surgical residency
training program. The New York Downtown Hospital Podiatric Residency
Training Program currently trains three residents per year in the PG1, PG2
and PG3 years. The podiatric residents also rotate on the Orthopaedic
Surgical Service as well as in the Emergency Department and various
medical services throughout the institution.
