Residency Training Program for Podiatric Medical/SurgicalNew York Downtown Hospital is a 130 bed acute care community hospital located in the financial district of Downtown Manhattan. New York Downtown Hospital addresses the health care needs of a diverse community by providing a full range of specialty and subspecialty services, from outpatient primary care to acute inpatient care. In addition to offering quality health and social services, New York Downtown Hospital proudly provides superior medical education programs including in surgery, medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, orthopaedic surgery and a podiatric medical-surgical residency. The 36 month podiatric medical & surgical residency (PM&S-36;/36) training program is fully accredited by CPME. The goal of the residency program is to provide effective, quality patient care in a stimulating academic environment to support educational growth and development. We currently are approved for nine PM&S-36; residents in training; 4 in each postgraduate year. Residents who complete our program are board eligible for ABPOPPM as well as by ABPS for foot surgery as well as reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. The division of podiatry is in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. There are more than 30 staff podiatrists, many of whom are actively involved in residency training. Additionally, the residents work closely with the orthopaedic residents and surgeons, several of whom specialize in foot and ankle surgery. The process of resident selection is objective and fair, resulting in the recruitment of the finest, most capable house staff for training. All applicants are given equal consideration without bias toward age, race, religion, gender or sexual preference. Applicants from all Colleges of Podiatric Medicine are encouraged. Salary & Benefits: Residents are contracted at a yearly salary which may be adjusted annually for cost of living. Health insurance and malpractice insurance are covered during the term of their employment. Residents receive a total of twenty paid vacation days per year. All applicants must complete the official Application for Residency form through the Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies (CASPR). Interviews are scheduled through the Centralized Regional Interview Program (CRIP) conducted by the AACPM, or at a mutually convenient time at the Hospital. Rotations: First year podiatric residents rotate through various services within the institution. Rotations include general surgery, medicine, emergency department, orthopaedic surgery and anesthesia. Additional rotations may include podiatric medicine and surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, neurology, wound care, pediatrics and dermatology. Each PGY I interacts with greater than 700 patients during the first year. The second and third years are focused on lower extremity pathology and surgery. Rotations are at our hospital as well as at the Center for Specialty Care: a prestigious outpatient surgery center on East 69th Street in Manhattan. In addition to clinical and didactic activities, each resident performs far greater numbers of procedures than the Minimum Activity Volume (MAV) as determined by CPME.
