Downtown Hospital Wins Patient Safety AwardDowntown Hospital wins Patient Safety Award from NY State Department of Health. The award was presented in recognition of Downtown Hospital's efforts to reduce the number of patients who experience falls while in the Hospital. Downtown Hospital will receive $200,000 as part of this recognition. “This comprehensive initiative has fostered the development of quality assurance measures which build on New York's reputation as a national leader in patient safety,” said the State's Health Commissioner, Antonia Novello, M.D., M.P.H., D.P.H. Dr. Novello explained that the award was highly competitive, with many hospitals submitting their safety programs for blind review by experts from Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Downtown Hospital was able to reduce its inpatient fall rate by about 47% through a comprehensive program that included enhanced assessments and interventions by the Nursing Department to identify patients at highest risk for falls; implementation of strategies to make sure that patients' fall risk was communicated in a consistent manner; and better assurance that interventions to reduce falls were maintained shift-to-shift and day-to-day. Downtown Hospital won the award – one of only two such awards presented for 2006 – in the category of hospitals with under 200 beds.
